I would like to know about precautions when having a dog.

Answer

If you have a dog that passed 90 days after birth, you must register your dog for the lifetime of the dog and have it received a rabies vaccination once a year.

In Japan, no case of dog rabies has been reported since 1956; however, many cases are still reported in other countries around the world, with about 50,000 people dying of rabies every year.

Rabies is an infectious disease to which you need to pay utmost attention. Once infected with the disease, the death rate is 100%.

Please be sure to have your beloved dog receive a rabies vaccination to protect it, and you and your family against this dreaded disease.

1. Rabies vaccination

(1) Please have your dog receive a vaccination at your veterinarian’s office or your nearest animal hospital. After your dog receives a vaccination, please obtain a rabies vaccination certificate. You can obtain a rabies vaccination certificate at the Public Health and Sanitation Section of your ward office. You can also obtain a certificate immediately after vaccination at "Rabies Vaccination Certificate Issuer Hospital".

(2) Please make sure you have your dog wear a collar with the dog license tag and vaccination certificate attached. If your address changes or your dog dies, you need to notify.

(3) Vaccination certificate fee: 550 yen per dog

2. Sterilization/castration operation

Please have your dog undergo a sterilization or castration operation in to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Not doing so may result in too many puppies for you to keep.

*Special Provisions System of the Rabies Prevention Act (Simplified registration procedures for dogs)

Beginning June 1, 2022, Kawasaki City will no longer require dog registration under the Rabies Prevention Act by changing microchip information to dog owner information at a designated registration agency of the Ministry of the Environment. In this case, the attached microchip is regarded as a license tag, so it is not necessary to wear a license tag.

For more information, please refer to the related page, "New System on Microchip Wearing for Dogs and Cats."
